IHUT vs. CLT vs. Concept Test: Which Fits Your Question?

A digital concept test tells you whether an idea resonates before you build anything. A CLT (central location test) tells you how a finished or near-finished product performs under controlled, side-by-side conditions. An IHUT (in-home usage test) tells you how a product actually holds up in real life, over real time, in a real household.
They answer different questions, at different stages, for different amounts of money—and picking the wrong one is one of the most common (and expensive) mistakes in product testing. Here's how to match the method to the question.
Start with the question, not the method
It's tempting to reach for whichever method you ran last time, or whichever one an agency happens to sell hardest. The better starting point is your business question: What decision does this study need to inform, and what would change your mind?
- If the question is "does this idea have legs at all," you don't need a physical product yet—you need a concept test.
- If the question is "does this formulation beat the competitor on taste, scent, or performance in a head-to-head," you need controlled conditions—a CLT.
- If the question is "does this product hold up when someone actually uses it in their own home, on their own schedule, for as long as they'd normally use it," you need real-world conditions—an IHUT.
Digital concept tests: validate the idea
A digital concept test shows respondents a concept—copy, imagery, claims, sometimes a mockup—and measures purchase intent, appeal, uniqueness, and message clarity. No physical product changes hands.
Best for: early-stage screening, message and claims testing, packaging design direction, comparing multiple concepts before committing budget to any of them.
Strengths: fast (often days), cheap relative to physical testing, easy to run multiple iterations or A/B variants.
Limitations: you're testing perception, not performance. A concept can score well and still fail once someone actually uses the product—taste, texture, scent, and real-world usability don't show up in a concept board.
CLTs: compare performance under controlled conditions
A central location test brings respondents to a facility to try a product—often side-by-side against a competitor or a previous formulation—under conditions the research team controls: same lighting, same serving temperature, same order of presentation, sometimes trained sensory panelists rating on standardized scales.
Best for: head-to-head performance comparisons, sensory optimization (taste, scent, texture), claims substantiation that needs statistical rigor, situations where you need to isolate the product from confounding variables like how it's stored or prepared at home.
Strengths: control. Because everyone experiences the product under identical conditions, differences in scores are more likely to reflect real differences in the product rather than noise from how it was used. This makes CLTs well-suited to defensible, numbers-driven claims.
Limitations: it's an artificial environment. A product that wins in a controlled taste test doesn't always win in someone's kitchen, where it's stored differently, used inconsistently, or competing for attention with a dozen other things. CLTs also require respondents to travel to a facility, which limits geographic reach and can introduce its own selection bias.
IHUTs: test the real-world experience
An in-home usage test sends product directly to respondents' homes and asks them to use it as they normally would, over a period of days or weeks, then report back on their experience.
Best for: understanding real-world performance and habits, validating that a product holds up over its actual use cycle (not just first impression), household and family dynamics (who actually uses it, how, how often), reformulations where the risk is "does this still work the way people expect."
Strengths: ecological validity—you're seeing how the product performs in the actual context it will be used in, including all the messiness of real life that a CLT controls away. This is often the closest proxy to in-market performance you can get before launch.
Limitations: logistics. Getting product safely to households—often blinded, sometimes temperature-controlled, sometimes alongside a competitive product for comparison—is operationally heavy, which is a large part of why IHUTs cost more and take longer than the other two methods—often tens of thousands of dollars more, depending on the category.

Most launches actually use more than one method in sequence: concept test to screen ideas, IHUT to validate real-world performance before you commit to a full launch, and so on. Treating these as stages of the same funnel—rather than three unrelated projects—is where a lot of teams leave value on the table. Running them on inconsistent audiences or incompatible platforms means you can't cleanly compare a concept score to an IHUT purchase-intent score six months later, even though that continuity is exactly what a launch forecast needs.
Timelines vary more than people expect
If speed is the constraint driving your method choice, it's worth knowing upfront that these three methods don't just differ in cost—they differ substantially in turnaround. A concept test can field in days; a CLT and an IHUT both involve real time, real logistics, and can't be meaningfully compressed past a certain point without cutting corners on data quality.
The bigger picture
None of these methods is inherently "better"—they're built to answer different questions, and the real skill is sequencing them correctly against your launch timeline rather than picking one and hoping it covers everything. Just as important: who actually runs these studies—your team, an agency, or some mix of both—is a separate decision worth making deliberately.
